Storyboard

When it came to making storyboards, I knew I was going to struggle as I’m not very good or experienced with drawing, especially when perspective is involved. For this reason I decided to put additional detail into describing the shots including adding a basic overhead set plan as they do in films. I also decided to create my drawings on the computer as, after some trying, I found they would look slightly better than if I was to draw them. I tried to keep the colours used simple as to avoid any overcomplication, it also makes it easier to focus on the key parts of each shot.

For shot one I wanted to add a bit of mystery for the opening. In concept its a quite simple shot of the clouds, but I think its a good way to start as it leaves the audience wondering what is going to happen. It also helps bring more attention to the next more important shot.

To add a bit of nuance I decided to have this shot in the point of view of a bird. This allows for a unique perspective of things the audience aren’t familiar with. It also adds a sense of scale to the scene which will be of further help in the subsequent shots.

The next shot follows straight on from the first. The camera shoots forward from the ‘bird’ revealing what could be said is the main focus of the story. The goal with this shot is to have the clouds act as a barrier that make the reveal of the lift more exiting.

The goal of shot 3 is to give a different perspective to the lift that the first one the audience has seen. At the same time it also help the less aware work out what this tower in the sky is and give an either greater sense of scale as the lift seems to not end. The quick zoom also adds some exhilaration to an otherwise simple scene.

Carrying on from the last shot 4 introduces the character into the video. Coming from a distance creates anticipation and once again mystery.

I decided to use slow motion in this shot as I think it will help give focus to the character being revealed while also not taking away from the pacing of the scene.

The next shot shifts to a completely new area/perspective. At this stage in the animation the full scale of the lift is cemented for the audience and that is the main purpose of this scene.

An additional shot of the lift having the same purpose as the previous shot. Implies the importance of this event as big compared to the rest of the world.

The goal here is that over the course of the animation tension is building as things speed up and move and this shot serves as the final step in this building demonstrated by the ramping shaking of the lifts exit.

This shot serves as a payoff to the build up of tension. The robot shoots out in a dramatic fashion and as a surprise twist reveals its hidden wings. As an addition I didn’t directly mention in the storyboard, I think it would be a good addition to add some dramatic music or sound effects to reinforce the payoff.
