Using Substance Painter

I chose to use substance as it is a well known texturing software, it also allows for texturing of the 3d model rather tan just the 2d maps. In order to better understand the software i first watched a YouTube video on it.

The first model i textured was the cocktail shaker. This was fairly simple as it was a single smart material over the whole model. The harder part about texturing was transferring over materials from substance to Maya. In order to do this i had to export the textures which splits it into its separate elements such as base colour and roughness. I then have to input these elements into a material in Maya. Transferring over the textures doesn’t always result in the same outcome on both ends which is the problem, therefore, some tweaking is necessary.

Once i got to other objects such as the coffin, i then had to learn how to texture with more than one material. In order to use multiple materials i had to use masks. The process involves adding masks to the different materials and the editing the masks in order to let the materials in lower layers show.

Another difficulty with texturing is UVs. Around half of my models could be automatically given a UV however, the rest required manual UVs which took an extensive amount of time to do. The bar station for example consisted of many separate objects which required separate UVs.
